Me in a nutshell - born in 1945; a life-long dabbler in art; proud father of renowned artist Emma Blyth (emmablyth.com.au); sold my first painting in 2001; participated in statewide Art Awards - particularly Mandjar Art Awards from 2008; joined Mandurah’s art community through Contemporary Art Spaces Mandurah in 2011; secured a year-long residency in CASM for 2017; my first solo exhibition in 2018; participated in many group exhibitions over the years; this is my third Peel Open Studios.
I paint with acrylics on canvas or panel. My art can be described as a judicious mix of realistic and abstract imagery, intended, through colour, distortion or symbolism, to present themes in more powerful and expressive ways. Practicing art has always been influenced by our stunning Australian environment and my strong connection to nature through my unabated camping, surfing, scuba diving, fishing, hiking and kayaking activities. I am captivated by the art and stories of our Aboriginal people and other worldwide diverse tribal cultures and ancient civilisations. Primitive beliefs, mythology, symbolism and iconography are subjects I research to inspire my artistic creations. All these things provoke within me a sense of spiritual mystery that inflames my imagination and drives my creativity. |
