In CASM’s inaugural joint Youth Residency, emerging award-winning artists Xanthe Turner and Kaelin van Rensberg partner to share early influences and experiences while furthering their individual creative practice.

Kaelin admires the style of the romantic era, with its heavy emphasis on dramatic lighting and ability to stir emotion. Although predominantly a portrait painter, she also adores the natural landscape and has a general enthusiasm for life itself! Using her favoured medium of oils, Kaelin enjoys painting subjects that celebrate the beauty and joy of life. Kaelin is using her residency experience to explore and experiment with a wider variety of techniques and materials, enabling her to more effectively capture light, colour, and movement to share her personal stories.

Xanthe is a passionate digital artist combining her multimedium artworks with more traditional sketchbook-based, watercolour and pencil pieces. She uses the genre of fantasy to explore broad social issues as well as her personal hopes and fears. Xanthe is currently researching contemporary portraiture, an area that challenges her due to her inability to recognise peoples’ facial features. Her new work explores the concept of walking through a room filled with people she’s known for years and being entirely unable to recognise anyone.
