Land has long been a central preoccupation in the work of Jill Catto, especially the subtle effect that geography of place has on the psyche of the people who live within the fold. Whilst Jill’s work has always celebrated the material aspect of land, her new works have begun to explore the effect of light as it plays over the land, casting forms into sharp or receding relief. This exploration was stimulated by a recent move to WA from Tasmania where the effect of the light through the land was initially dazzling, the predominance of yellow and the many hues of green so immediately impactful.
Jill mainly works on board with oil, pigments and mixed media. Recently she has begun to work more with line and mark making to generate more of a sense of movement through the work, the intent being to represent land as a place of change as opposed to the still view often captured through landscape painting. |
